Is there any movement in the Post-modern that has enough continuity in work or purpose to be a "real" Art movement of note? To my knowledge the last substantial movement was Neo-expressionism which essentially died in the 1980’s with a failing economy. The Post- modern seems to be a time where anything goes- style, media, retro ideas etc… with no decided direction for any notable group except maybe a resurgence of Realism which never really left. Does economics have a role in this lack of direction? Enlighten me!

  • I think I am a slippery -Postmodern - FisH . to dive in the discussion without reading it all ..
    William I think I could " see a light in the end of the TUNNEL " ..
    First of all I am an Engineer . and - that last century was an engineer`s century ..
    , and of course the century of the SciENCE . 
    SO , art and Art History could not coup to put 2 basic things , I just said above ..
    When you are talking about E c o n o m i c s , I am understanding , that , YES , " Economy is a Science .. /( or , economy is an instrument , to push every body into the s c i e n c e .. or reverse , push science into every thing .. )

    On the other Hand , POSTMODERN came .. /( some say that that Post Modern should have to be PRE - MoDERN E R A ,, b u t because ARCHiTECT - Plan Makers are , Making " ART History " , in all these centuries , PRE MODERN E R A could not happen before the MODERNiTY .. /( Modernity -impressionism- has come at the same time , with the modern physics -Quantum Mechanics ) .

    They say " Post modern is a slippery fish , you can not hold it in your hand " ..
    Let`s put this saying in the painting .. that is : " Paint is a slippery fish " and you can not hold it with your HAND because it is to be a slippery t h i n g ..
    AS a classical - artist has to TRY to hold that PAiNT with - HAND , and PUT A FiGURE in it , opposite to this - " POSMODERN artist -in Painting " has to be someone " that can not hold - PaiNT " ..
    /(let`s not go to J.Pollock drippings now .)

    SO slippery paint will " SLiPPER - t h e - F i g u r e " -or slide the figure- " w h e r e " even artist could not know .
    i M P R E S S i O N ism tried to MAKE F i g u r e , " Foggy - and misty " .. to make the Figure - borders , d i s s o l v e .. but NO -one succeeded in to d i v i d e FiGURE into 4 ../( because because cavas was 4 Sided ., M i n d sould try to PUT Figure equally into for sides of the CANVAS ..

    can provide us - NOW .

    very fast quick - improvisation of painting has to be done

Alphabet in fact is a " contemporary instrument " .

WE are to " MAKE a Format " to WRiTE ..

Let's say ; I have a story to tell in my mind . and I will write it .
I will write it on one page only . and I will divide it to 4 - writings .
that is I will write 4 writings with 4 Headlines .
A Writing with 4 parts .
That has to be a performance /( that is 4 writings has to be written at once )

Like a " i m a g e - painting " has to be 4 - sided /( when you turn the painting on it's 4 Sides you must be able to see 4 other - painting on every side )
/( just like a symphony with 4 Parts ) .
A Writing can be divided into 4 Parts ..

when I write a " 4 writings - performance " in fact I am making practice
to divide a PAiNTiNG into 4-Sides .

SO result comes to that :

I can WRiTE my writing in 4 parts on a page /( a page is just like a canvas to paint on ) before I will MAKE my POSTMODERN - Serial - fast improvisations with spatula .. /( if I was dividing the subject into 4 in my writing then there is a possibility that there can be i m a g e s , in my fast painting improvisations that they might be " 4 - sided " also .. )

SO with Postmodern - fast - paintings /(MODERNiSM ) we can try to catch some
4 - sided , MODERNiTY /(MODERN ) Paintings . by using the advantage of " A CONTEMPORARY - WRiTiNG STYLE " ..

I wrote these all :
to put , , CONTEMPORARY -and MODERNiSM - and MODERNiTY , all three , in as a " ONE - PAiNTiNG -3 W O R Ks performance "/( JOB ) ..

AS Postmoderism WAS naturally on the way to t h e CONTENPORARY
and " Contemporary - art " ; they were saying that " Painting is dead " .
o.k. , then ,, " painting has to be burried under many things so a n e w painting could emerge from this " DEAD PAiNTiNG s t y l e " ..

if someone is begining a painting with drawing " F i G U R E S " ,
then FREEDOM o f t h e creation , has been cripled in the first act .
.. image has to be totally f r e e , when occuring ..
Artist shouldn't put it into FiGURE's B o r d e r - L i n e s ..

in that , postmodern's - " fast occuring of THE i m a g e ",
we begin to work with the paint and colors, but not with Figurative Lines .
and i m a g e s get their lines from the " writing's letter - lines " .
S O Lines are free /(come from writing)
and color is moving f r e e l y with a , slippering -SPATULA ,
that means :
COLOR and LiNES while making image , are 2 Times free ..

" TO paint a Figure " can maybe be t h e most difficult - thing .
to DO sometimes .
.. because if you first draw the FiGURE, then
colors has to obey the Figure - L i n e s ..
.. can they always o b e y , the Figure Lines ?
Some times Figure Lines will make it imposible for COLORs to obey ..

,, but if colors are freely - moving on and in each other
/( while postmodern serial fast and slippery paint DANCE with SPATULA )
then " little - lines " from the Alphabet Letters of " PRELIMANARY - WRiTiNGs "
will begin to , drop into the suitable - moves of the - color - mixtures ..

Alphabet letter - Lines are tiny .. and they can be in equilibrium with
" paint's COLOR's - MOVES " ..

THAT MEANs : " i m a g e - L i N E S " ; ,, has to OCCUR with
both color and writing lines ..
sometimes COLORs can BENT , the LiNES of the image ..
..BUT in figurative PAiNTiNG ;
, colors mostly can not E v e r -BEND the " Mighty - FiGURE " ..

Regarding Murat's posts, I found it useful to click on his profile and then to visit his website and his YouTube channel, and to watch some of his videos. I think many of his "painting-like" visuals are quite striking. But he is obviously a conceptual/performance artist who apparently believes that he must assume that persona at all times (kind of like Pee Wee Herman does), which explains why he chooses not to write ordinary sentences like everyone else here is doing. It's clear, however, that he IS able to write in a "normal" way, because some of the text in his profile and website read that way. All of which is fine, if that's what he wants to do. So I have to get personal. I am ambivalent - if you concider that to be open minded - you are being too nice to me :-) I see patterns in everything in Life, and these patterns also include paradoxes. These paradoxes somehow hold everything together, and therefor I have accepted that it is hard to find objective truths. I become the "questioner" not sometimes, but all times. And in this case, the aesthetics might not be the trigger but arrive on the doorstep of your mind as a subconscious present,- which will be the trigger to label it as art. The trigger in this process can be on a different mental level and have a different purpose if any purpose at all - as often the case is with art.

Nerdrum, refuses to be called an artist. He declares that his work is Kitsch, and the concept of Kitsch painters requires a reinterpretation of their relationship to art, to humanity and to society.  Murat, there are some things in your declarations that are very clear and make sense to me = acceptable, while some things you say repetedly I just do not and cannot understand. This mostly has to do with the process; your strict instructions how to reach true art work making. And do not for a moment think that I read you sloppely, but I am maybe not used to your way of using words or bringing up a new kind of almost paralell language when communicating. I would never dismiss it, I am just not used to it and it takes time for me to learn new languages on any level today. However, with all due respect, I confess to struggling with Murat's style. I appreciate the conceptual aspect of your contributions Murat, but when writing's goal in this context is to engage in discourse to share ideas, I find it problematic when the style is purposefully obscure. 

Please understand that I mean no disrespect, and certainly don't wish to offend, since I'm interested in your thoughts. It's simply that time is precious, and I limit my online attention to maximize my studio practice, so if posts take me longer to decipher, I may just skip them.

 Murat..My interpretation of the poem in the last post relating to our discussion : Man wrestling with his own spirituality within himself......trying to find his spirituality ..... Aesthetics is a spiritual experience that is imposed upon us ....we stop wrestling in the aesthetic experience....that is the beauty of the experience....something I will pursue. It is cathartic in a gentle manner. 
What is your purpose in portraying /pursuing evil? ( as you call it). Is it cathartic in a different manner ? Perhaps the artists' intent is different but the experience is related .... Can the artist pursue the aesthetics and still have intent in his art? I think all artists have intent ... purpose ... But perhaps not all intents serve the aesthetics but focus more on purpose or message ...that does not mean that intents that serve the aesthetics is absent of thought or purpose....I see intent as a thought process that comes before the aesthetic experience. Some intents serve the aesthetics and perhaps some do not...I do not know if it is a different experience but still related. To pursue the aesthetics does not mean the work is without intent, or purpose, or thinking.

 I agree, Murat, that spontaneity must be allowed in the process. I usually have an intent to start my work but during the process I am open to the spontaneity of the medium, the brush/tool and my senses concerning the process and how they all interact together. Art must be free to evolve during the process. I believe that is true for art but perhaps there is even other elements that lead us to "aesthetics/the real" in art.....commitment with a passion.....perhaps that is what you are calling "sex"?

 Murat, men and woman can both have this passion/drive in the creative process.....many believe we carry characteristics of both sexes....of course there is dominance of some characteristics in each gender, but I do not see this as important in the creative process, but i feel that you do? Rosetta Epifano Murat I am wondering about the idea of symmetry ....are you talking about symmetry in the traditional sense?or an advanced form of symmetry...I have always been drawn to asymmetric composition....I know that some people talk of symmetry as the same as balance. I find them to be different. Asymmetry can be balanced but it is not in my mind the same as symmetry which I consider as visually identical sides.

Rosetta Epifano Murat, I conclude that if the male component is reason/intent/logic and the female component is spiritual and creative ..... they shall find a natural balance within each other and give birth to the aesthetics and beauty/real. That is quite beautiful.
I find this relates to the R-mode (right-brain processes) and L-Mode (left-brain processes). The right brain is more about perception, intuition, and creativity and the left-brain is concerned with logic, critical thinking, and reason. I finally understand all this "sex talk"....lol!
